The project aims to better understand the consequences of global warming on the functioning of our forests by studying the response of different organisms to rising temperatures.

The first part of the project will study how the timing between the microbial activity of the soil providing nutrients for plants, the onset of tree growth in the spring and the hatching of the eggs of a generalist herbivorous insect changes as the climate warms.

The second part will use a new method based on water isotopes to monitor the progress of winter bud dormancy of major temperate tree species.

The third part of the project will focus on experimentally quantifying the effects of early spring development of trees on their performance and use of resources (water and nutrients).
