Abstract

The role played by climate change in the drastic decline of insect pollinators has to date been studied primarily by assessing changes in their abundance or geographical range. While the ability for pollinators to provide ecosystem services also depends on their capacity to acquire, process and respond to environmental information, the effect of climate change on this capacity has been largely overlooked. In this talk, I will present work that my lab has been doing to understand how increasing temperatures affect sensing, cognition and behaviour in insect pollinators and the consequences that this may have for the ecosystem services they provide under climate change.

About the speaker

Emily Baird is a professor at the Stockholm University. Her research program is focussed on understanding the link between the visual world of animals and how the brain uses visual information to guide behaviour in different environments. To do this, she takes a comparative approach that uses a combination of behavioural experiments and anatomical analyses using X-ray micro computed-tomography using bumblebees and dung beetles as primary model systems.

Biodiversity Seminars

The Biodiversity Seminar Series are organized by the WSL Biodiversity Center. Every two weeks, we aim to host a seminar speaker who presents research or outreach on topics relevant to the biodiversity community at WSL. The seminars are public and are usually broadcast online.
