Abstract

The intensification of climatic anomalies is a major driver of ecosystem change. Research on biodiversity and ecosystem stability has largely relied on experimental studies, often focusing on drought. Yet climate projections indicate that both extreme dry and wet events will increase in frequency and intensity. Here, we leverage the sPlot database to synthesize observational data from globally distributed grassland ecosystems and test whether functional community structure mitigates the impacts of climatic anomalies on productivity across a 25-year time series. We find that while both extreme dry and wet events reduce the resistance of productivity, functional redundancy and communities dominated by acquisitive, fast-growing species buffer these effects. Our results demonstrate that response diversity supports the maintenance of stability in ecosystems across time and space.

About the speaker

I am a plant community ecologist exploring how changes in biodiversity affect the way ecosystems function in the Anthropocene.

In grassland communities, I study how species loss affects productivity and how the complex links between diversity and functional composition buffer ecosystem functioning during climate extremes.

To understand these processes, I combine observational, experimental, and evidence synthesis approaches across local to global scales.

Biodiversity Seminars

The Biodiversity Seminar Series are organized by the WSL Biodiversity Center. Every two weeks, we aim to host a seminar speaker who presents research or outreach on topics relevant to the biodiversity community at WSL. The seminars are public and are usually broadcast online.
