En Suisse comme ailleurs, la biodiversité décline. Nous élaborons les bases scientifiques pour la protection des espèces menacées et surveillons la qualité de divers milieux naturels. Pour les zones protégées, nous menons des recherches sur les répercussions socio-économiques.
Le mitage du territoire, l'utilisation intensive des sols et des eaux, la propagation d'espèces exotiques envahissantes ainsi que les apports élevés de pesticides et d'azote provenant de l'agriculture influent négativement sur la biodiversité en Suisse et dans le monde entier. En conséquence, les listes rouges des espèces animales et végétales menacées s’allongent et la capacité de fonctionnement et d’adaptation des écosystèmes s’amenuise.
Nous examinons les relations entre les espèces menacées et leurs milieux naturels et mettons au point des instruments pour les protéger. Nous nous concentrons sur la forêt, les zones urbaines et les régions de montagne. Nous modélisons la répartition des espèces ainsi que le potentiel de milieux naturels appropriés, et livrons des bases pour la mise en place de mesures de protection de la nature.
Recherche pour la pratique
Un grand nombre d’espèces animales et végétales sont menacées car leurs habitats diminuent en superficie et en qualité. Afin de mieux les protéger, la Confédération a désigné des biotopes d’importance nationale: les prairies et pâturages secs, les zones alluviales, les marais et les sites de reproduction de amphibiens. Dans le cadre du suivi des effets de la protection des biotopes en Suisse, le WSL analyse si ces biotopes se développent comme le prévoient les objectifs de protection.
Nous collaborons depuis longtemps avec des services spécialisés de la Confédération et des cantons, traitons les résultats de nos recherches pour leur application pratique et informons la Confédération, les cantons et autres parties prenantes. Les chercheuses et chercheurs du WSL élaborent des plans d’action pour la protection des espèces et fournissent les bases scientifiques pour créer des listes rouges et des concepts de mise en réseau.
Les mesures de protection de la nature se heurtent parfois à la résistance de la population, car elles entraînent par exemple des coûts ou limitent les possibilités d’exploitation ou d’utilisation à titre de loisirs. C’est pourquoi nous appliquons des méthodes des sciences économiques et sociales pour examiner les répercussions socio-économiques des mesures de protection de la nature. En cas de conflits, nous analysons l’efficacité de différentes solutions.
