Nur mit gesunden Böden können Wälder die erwünschten Ökosystem-Leistungen erbringen. Wir untersuchen, wie externe Faktoren wie Schadstoffe, Klimawandel oder Bewirtschaftung die Funktionen und Stoffkreisläufe in Böden von naturnahen Ökosystemen beeinflussen.
Böden erfüllen verschiedene Funktionen. Sie versorgen die Pflanzen mit Wasser und Nährstoffen für ihr Wachstum («Produktions-Funktion»), sie sind Lebensraum für zahlreiche Organismen («Lebensraum-Funktion») und regulieren die Stoffflüsse von Wasser, Kohlenstoff und Nährstoffen («Regulations-Funktion»). Diese Funktionen sind wichtige Faktoren für die Erfüllung von Ökosystem-Leistungen wie Holz- und Energieproduktion, Kohlenstoff-Bindung, Hochwasserschutz und die Versorgung mit Trinkwasser.
Äussere Einflüsse wie Schadstoffeinträge, steigende Temperaturen oder menschliche Eingriffe verändern den Wasser- und Nährstoffkreislauf und damit die Wachstumsbedingungen für Wurzeln und Mikroorganismen im Boden. Dadurch wandelt sich auch die Zusammensetzung der Bodenlebensgemeinschaft. Die Bewirtschaftung mit schweren Forstmaschinen zum Beispiel hat somit Auswirkungen auf die Bodenfruchtbarkeit.
Diesen Wechselwirkungen gehen wir mit Feld- und Laborexperimenten, aber auch in langfristig angelegten Beobachtungsprojekten nach. Mit den Erkenntnissen können wir Aussagen dazu machen, welche Lebensbedingungen Bäume, ihre Wurzeln sowie Bodenorganismen jetzt und in Zukunft in Wald- und anderen nicht bewirtschafteten Böden antreffen und in welchen Netzwerken sie verknüpft sind.

Waldböden sind weitgehend ungestört und natürlich aufgebaut. Ihre charakteristischen Merkmale erlauben Rückschlüsse auf die abgelaufenen Prozesse der Bodenbildung und geben Hinweise auf Eigenschaften von Waldböden und ihre Funktionen.
Böden sind Lebensraum für unzählige Lebewesen, die beim Ab- und Umbau von organischer Substanz eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Gesunde Böden sind für die Nachhaltigkeit im Wald eine grundlegende Voraussetzung.
Im Forum für Wissen wollen wir die Multifunktionalität der Waldböden als Speicher, Filter und Lebensraum hervorheben und auf Beeinträchtigungen von Bodenfunktionen durch Klimafolgen und Bewirtschaftung sowie auf geeignete Massnahmen zur Erhaltung hinweisen.
