Swiss National Forest Inventory

What does the Swiss forest look like and how does it change over time? The Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI) answers these questions.

NFI field teams collect data on trees and forest stands on approximately 6500 sample plots and interview the local forestry services. Among other items, NFI publishes results on forest area, stemp count, volume, increment, yield, biodiversity, the quality of the protection function and socio-cultural services of the forest. The data are collected continuously and provide valuable information on how the Swiss forest is developing in the long term.

WSL carries out NFI in collaboration with the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN). The WSL is responsible for research and development, planning, data collection, analysis and scientific interpretation, while the FOEN is responsible for implementation in terms of forest policy.
