Sites

Approximately 50 plots lie within the systematic subnetwork of the Swiss National Forest Inventory LFI. Until 1992, the Sanasilva network consisted of a 4 x 4 km, between 1993 and 1997 of a 8 x 8 km, and since 1998 of a 16 x 16 km grid of the pan-european network of ICP Forests Level I . LWF long-term research sites

19 non-systematically distributed sites within Switzerland. The criteria defining the choice of site locations within Switzerland dependet on the goal of covering the main forest communities, the main geographical regions and the main regions where forests may be most under environmental pressure. Both Davos and Lägeren are regarded as Super sites and are part of the NABEL network. See blue dots on the map.

The long-term research sites of the LWF programme provide a gateway to other monitoring networks. For example, TreeNet makes use of LWF and IAP sites. Further information on TreeNet see project page. See red dots on the map.

The LWF program is extended by several sites where the respective forest ecosystem is subjected to experimental treatment. These experimental sites serve to address specific issues (see projects). See purple dots on the map.
