WSL Seminar Series Talk:

Underground Shifts: How climate change reshapes interactions between trees and soil microbes

by Dr. Gemma Rutten, Institute of Plant Sciences and Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research, University of Bern, Switzerland

Abstract

Reciprocal interactions between trees and soil microorganisms shape forest regeneration and influence succession, invasion, and species coexistence. Such plant soil feedback arise from complex interactions among plants, mutualists, and antagonists in the soil, each of which has unique responses to various environmental cues. This makes it challenging to predict the outcome of these feedbacks, especially now environmental conditions are changing. I will show that a combination of unique experimental field approaches helps advance our understanding of plant soil feedbacks and the way they affect forest community regeneration under ongoing climate change.
