The WSL-Eawag Biodiversity Center is pleased to announce  a series of events on “Communicating Biodiversity Effectively Across Boundaries.” Take part in three interactive one-hour webinars on 11 and 12 November, and continue the conversation in an in-person workshop on 13 November, featuring a moderated panel and peer discussion.

Effective communication is central to biodiversity research and its societal impact. WSL researchers frequently interact with stakeholders such as city planners, land managers, farmers, policymakers, and NGOs. Yet, communication barriers (e.g., scientific jargon, mismatched expectations, conflict-prone phrasing) often hinder constructive dialogue. To overcome these barriers, the workshop focuses on three core topics that are particularly relevant and potentially challenging for communicating biodiversity: Self and Audience Awareness, Bridging the Gap between Scientists and Non-Scientists, and Conflict Management. These principles reflect recurring challenges in biodiversity communication. “Self and Audience Awareness” helps scientists adapt their message by reflecting on their role as communicators and the needs of diverse audiences, while “Bridging the Gap” addresses mistrust and misunderstandings that often emerge between scientific and non-scientific experts. Finally, “Conflict Management” is crucial because biodiversity issues frequently involve competing land uses, political tensions, and conflicting values, making dialogue especially sensitive.

This event will introduce general principles of the three topics through webinars by experts in science communications. Then on the workshop day, experts with practical experience in communicating science (especially biodiversity research) will speak about their personal experiences and lessons learned, and also take part in a moderated panel session and Q&A. Afterwards, participants will apply the knowledge from the webinars and panel session through group exercises on a variety of scenarios in which biodiversity researchers interact with non-scientists and explore different approaches for effect communication.

No prior experience is necessary, but attending the webinar is highly encouraged before attending the workshop.
