Contenuto principale
La foresta ricopre circa un terzo del territorio svizzero, caratterizza il nostro paesaggio e migliora la qualità di vita. Al WSL studiamo questo complesso ecosistema affinché l'uomo possa fare un uso adeguato della foresta e proteggerla.
La foresta protegge da pericoli naturali come cadute di massi e valanghe, filtra l'acqua potabile e impedisce l'erosione del suolo. Essa fornisce legno, trattiene carbonio, rappresenta un luogo ricreativo per l'uomo, un habitat per flora e fauna nonché un tesoro di biodiversità.
Gli effetti di cambiamenti climatici ed eventi naturali
Gli sconvolgimenti planetari che hanno colpito il sistema climatico e la società costituiscono una minaccia crescente per le succitate funzioni forestali: i cambiamenti climatici, la perdita della biodiversità, l'introduzione di organismi e la produttività legata allo sfruttamento del legno in che modo si ripercuotono sulla foresta? Cosa accade in un tale contesto ai cicli dei nutrienti, allo stoccaggio del carbonio, alla resilienza delle foreste nei confronti dei parassiti e a tutte le funzioni importanti per l'essere umano?
Utilizzare il legno, conservare la foresta, proteggere il suolo
Ecco le questioni affrontate dalla nostra ricerca. L'attenzione del WSL si focalizza sull'utilizzo sostenibile delle risorse forestali, atte a mantenere inalterate nonché favorire le funzioni e la capacità di adattamento della foresta. In tale contesto, svolgono un ruolo importante i vari progetti di monitoraggio forestale a lungo termine e i siti sperimentali, di cui ci occupiamo da oltre 100 anni. La serie di dati raccolta grazie ad essi documenta la condizione e l'utilizzo delle foreste svizzere. Essi aiutano inoltre a capire come il suolo, l'acqua, l'aria e il clima, i parassiti e i fenomeni come tempeste e incendi boschivi interagiscano con l'ecosistema della foresta.
Uno sguardo al futuro
Vogliamo gettare uno sguardo al possibile futuro della foresta, e per fare ciò è necessario uno studio che poggia su ampie basi: osservazioni protratte nel tempo, informazioni risalenti a dati di anelli annuali remoti, esperimenti in laboratorio e sul campo, modellazione computerizzata e conoscenza approfondita delle pratiche di coltivazione. Il WSL raggruppa tutti questi approcci sotto un solo ente. Per attuare ciò utilizziamo tecniche di ricerca ambientale all'avanguardia, nonché analisi isotopiche per le quali gestiamo un apposito laboratorio di isotopi.
Essendo uno dei principali istituti di ricerca forestale nel mondo facciamo parte di numerosi network di ricerca a livello europeo e globale, come il Long-Term Ecosystem Research in Europe (LTER). Nella nostra iniziativa strategica SwissForestLab coordiniamo un network di ricercatori svizzeri provenienti dalle più svariate aree disciplinari, creando così una sinergia volta ad affrontare le questioni principali della ricerca.
Non da ultimo, in quanto istituto federale ci assumiamo l'incarico di trasmettere le nostre conoscenze sotto forma di raccomandazioni, schede pratiche e corsi di aggiornamento rivolti a chi si occupa di pratica forestale e protezione della natura.

I cambiamenti climatici stanno aumentando la frequenza di ondate di calore e siccità prolungate con effetti immediati sul pericolo di incendio boschivo. La conoscenza dell’ecologia del fuoco del faggio è una premessa indispensabile per pianificare la ricostituzione post-incendio dei servizi forniti dalle faggete.

Das diesjährige Forum für Wissen präsentiert eine Auswahl dieser Forschungsresultate aus Deutschland und der Schweiz und hat zum Ziel, bisherige Wege der Biodiversitätsförderung im Wald zu reflektieren und neue Möglichkeiten zu skizzieren. Die Themenvielfalt – sei es der Einfluss der Bewirtschaftung auf die Biodiversität, das Potenzial von Renaturierungsmassnahmen, die Wirkung von natürlichen Störungen oder sozialwissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zu Naturschutzprogrammen – weist darauf hin, dass die Biodiversitätsförderung im Schweizer Wald eine Querschnittsaufgabe ist und nur gemeinsam im transdisziplinären Austausch gelingen kann.

Der Sihlwald ist einer der grössten zusammenhängenden Buchenwälder im schweizerischen Mittelland. Im Jahr 2000 wurde die Holznutzung eingestellt. Auf einer Fläche von 1098 ha steht der Wald seit 2007 als Naturwaldreservat und seit 2008 als kantonales Natur- und Landschaftsschutzgebiet (SVO Sihlwald) unter strengem Schutz.
Die jährlichen Erhebungen zum Vorkommen von waldrelevanten Quarantäneschädlingen in der Schweiz wurden in Jungpflanzenbetrieben, in privaten und öffentlichen Grünflächen und im Wald durchgeführt. Zusätzlich wurden Warenimporte mit Verpackungsholz kontrolliert.
Die vorliegende Aufnahmeanleitung (Feldaufnahmeanleitung LFI5) beschreibt den Ablauf der Arbeiten für die Feldaufnahmen des fünften Schweizerischen Landesforstinventars in den Jahren 2018–2026. Sie enthält die Definitionen und Aufnahmevorschriften der aufzunehmenden Merkmale. Sie dient den Feldaufnahmegruppen und den Datennutzern als Nachschlagewerk.
Les relevés du quatrième inventaire forestier national suisse (IFN) ont eu lieu entre 2009 et 2017, en moyenne huit ans après le troisième inventaire. Les résultats sur l'état et l'évolution de la forêt suisse sont présentés et expliqués en détail. Le rapport est structuré thématiquement selon les critères et indicateurs européens pour la gestion durable des forêts : ressources forestières, santé et vitalité, production de bois, diversité biologique, forêt protectrice et socio-économie. L'ouvrage s'achève par un bilan de la durabilité basé sur les résultats de l'IFN.
In den Jahren 2009 bis 2017 fanden die Erhebungen zum vierten Schweizerischen Landesforstinventar (LFI) statt, im Durchschnitt acht Jahre nach der dritten Erhebung. Die Resultate über den Zustand und die Entwicklung des Schweizer Waldes werden umfassend dargestellt und erläutert. Der Bericht ist thematisch strukturiert nach den europäischen Kriterien und Indikatoren zur nachhaltigen Bewirtschaftung des Waldes: Waldressourcen, Gesundheit und Vitalität, Holzproduktion, biologische Vielfalt, Schutzwald und Sozioökonomie. Eine Bilanz zur Nachhaltigkeit, basierend auf LFI-Ergebnissen, schliesst die Publikation ab.

Das vorliegende WSL-Projekt untersucht die Umsetzungsmöglichkeiten der Energiestrategie 2050 des Bundes – Reduktion Energieverbrauch und Erhöhung erneuerbarer Anteil – am Beispiel eines Kantons.
