Wir erforschen die Vielfalt an Tieren und Pflanzen, insbesondere im Wald und im Gebirge, und untersuchen Faktoren, die die Artenzusammensetzung beeinflussen. Für Flechten und Pilze betreiben wir nationale Datenzentren und stellen damit die Grundlagen für den Artenschutz bereit.
Die Artenvielfalt ist ein Mass für die Vielfalt an Tieren, Pflanzen, Pilzen, Flechten und Mikroorganismen in einem Lebensraum. Sie ist ein wichtiger Aspekt der Biodiversität. Oft wird Artenvielfalt mit Biodiversität gleichgesetzt, da sie die anschaulichste Ebene der Biodiversität ist.
Sterben Arten in einem Lebensraum aus, gibt es Verschiebungen oder Ausfälle in den Funktionen des Ökosystems. Es ist schwierig vorherzusehen, welchen Effekt das Verschwinden einer bestimmten Art haben wird. Darum ist es nicht nur aus ethischen und gesetzlichen Gründen wichtig, die gesamte Artenvielfalt zu schützen, sondern auch im Sinne einer Vorsorgemassnahme.
Artenzusammensetzung verändert sich
Wir untersuchen, welche Faktoren die Artenvielfalt beeinflussen. Besonders interessiert uns, wie sich Artenzusammensetzungen in Raum und Zeit verändern und wie der Klimawandel die Artenvielfalt beeinflusst. Mit statistischen Modellen können wir die Artenvielfalt für verschiedene Organismengruppen vorhersagen und zeigen, unter welchen Landnutzungs- und Umweltbedingungen sie besonders gross ist. Mit unseren Arbeiten schaffen wir die wissenschaftliche Basis, die Artenvielfalt in der Schweiz zu schützen. Wir informieren Bund, Kantone und die Öffentlichkeit bezüglich Schutzmassnahmen und erstellen Rote Listen für verschiedene Organismengruppen.
